The goal is not to run every zone as long as possible. It is to reach roots while limiting evaporation, overspray and runoff.

Keep new beds on drip where practical so water reaches roots without wetting pavement or losing as much to evaporation.
Request any qualifying new-construction or erosion-control exemption before work begins, then return the controller to the normal schedule when it ends.

Break a long run into shorter cycles. Pause between cycles so clay soil can absorb water before it becomes runoff.
